The city of Kathmandu derives its name from Kasthamandap, an imposing wooden pagoda near the Hanuman Dhoka Palace. The city of Kathmandu is a perfect mixture of the ancient, traditional and modern. Kathmandu is also the centre of all commercial, political, cultural and social activities and the tourist, adventure and mountaineering excursions. The best time to visit Kathmandu is from September to November and February to May.
There are about 2000 temples and shrines in Kathmandu. The most interesting things to see in Kathmandu are clustered around the old towns between the old marketplace and the shopping centre along the New Road. The main places to visit in Kathmandu are Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Stupa, Kumari Temple. Besides visiting the above places, the tourists can also have one day excursion to various places nearby Kathmandu. Some of these places are Bodhnath, Pashupatinath Temple, Budhanikantha Temple and Dakshinkali Temple, Daman, Changu Narayan Temple, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel etc.
Itinerary
At 8:00 am: Today we begins with the breakfast in the hotel, will be explored to the fascinating city of Kathmandu. First we go to Pashupatinath, the world’s biggest temple of Lord shiva, which is approximately 5 km east of Kathmandu. We reach Pashupatinath at half an hour. Hindu along are premises to enter the temple. Non hindus are allowed to see the temple on the bank of the Bagmati river. It is built in pagoda style,has a gilded roof and beautifully carved silver door. Then we move to Bouddhanath Stupa at 9:00 am, lies 8 km to the east of Kathmandu.
At 9:15 am: We reached Bouddhanath, approx 15 minutes from Pashupatinath in car. It is a largest stupa in Kathmandu Valley (height of 36 meters and diameter of 120 meters). Bouddhanath is a God of wisdom. RS 150 for foreigners and Rs 40 for Saarc countries. Buddhanath is one of the most imposing landmarks in Kathmandu, visible as soon as you land at the Tribhuvan International Airport. This colossal stupa with all seeing eyes of lord Buddha is known by Bouddhanath, the god of wisdom. The design is much like the Swayambhu stupa, except the squares recede instead of circles. Bouddhanath attracts Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world. Then we move to Budhanilkantha at 10:00 am.
At 10:30 am: We reached Budhanilkantha after the seightseeing of Bouddhanath. The largest of Vishnu’s stone statues, Budhanilkantha lies at the foothills of the Shivapuri hills, 8 km north of the Kathmandu. This temples belongs to the 8th century A.D. The colossal statue of Lord Vishnu, reclining on a bed of snakes. The sculptured statue belongs to Lichchhavi period the fifth century. It is placed in the middle of a small pond and seems to float on the surface of the water. It is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus. No one knows who built the statue, according to legend, it was accidentally unearthed by a farmer.
At 11:00 am: After the seightseeing the Budhanilkantha, then we move to Basantapur Durbar Square. We reach Basantapur Durbar Square at half an hour approximately from Buddhanilkantha, situated in the heart of the old Kathmandu city at Basantapur.
At 11:30 am: Start seightseeing of Durbar Square, which is one of the major attractions in Kathmandu Valley. Interesting things to see here are Hanuman Dhoka Royal Palace, the historical seat of the royalty, Taleju Mandir towering more than 40 meters ,Kumari Ghar, the residence of the living Goddess of Kumari, Maru Ganesh, Kal Bhairav the God of justice, Shiva and Parvati Temple, Aakash Bhairav Temple is located on a busy market street called Indra Chowk. Aakash Bhairav, Kasthamandal, known as Maru Sattal, Freak streat ,Nasal chock.
At 2:00 pm: After taking lunch, we move to Swayambhunath (Monkey temple). We reached there at half an hour from Basantapur Durbar Square.
At 2:30 pm: The Monkey temple is located on the hillside 3 km on the west of Kathmandu. Its almost 2600 years old Buddhist shrine. It is believed that the lotus of valley settled when the water was drained by Manjushri, the God of wisdom. This is also a place to have bird eye view on Kathmandu tour since the hillock presents picture of entire town. A stupa on the top of hill- from here you can overlook the scenery of Kathmandu Valley. Now we move to Patan at 3:00 pm.
At 3:30 pm: We reach Patan atfter the seightseeing of Swayambhunath. Patan is a city of Nepal located in the 5 kms southeast of Kathmandu Valley. This ancient city is rich in culture. The major attractions of Patan are:
Patan Durbar Square lies in the heart of Patan. The major attractions of Patan Durbar Square is the ancient Royal Palace. It consists three chowks- Mul Chowk, Sundari Chowk and Keshav Narayan Chowk. Mahabouddha ,thousand images of Lord Buddha, Rudra Varna Mahavihar, oldest Buddhist monasteries, Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, most important monastery, Jagat Naraya, tall Shikhara style temple considered to Lord Vishnu, Ashoka Stupa, built in 250 BC by the Ashoka emperor, Tibetan Refugee Camp, Patan Industrial State, Krishna Mandir, dedicate to the Lord Krishna, Patan Museum. After the seightseeing of Patan we return back to Kathmandu at 5:30pm. In the evening, a welcome dinner will be served in a traditional Nepali Resturant with a cultural program. Overnight in Kathmandu.
