Helambu Trek is a relatively short trek compared to the other trekking trails in Nepal. Helambu Trek, however, is equally popular among the trekkers as it is located nearby the capital city of Kathmandu. As the itinerary is quite short, Helambu Trek is suitable for those who do not have enough time for a longer trek. The trek lasts for just 8-9 days but it provides a wonderful opportunity to explore the traditional Sherpa village in Helambu and know about their culture that has stood for so many years. Helambu Trek encompasses the diverse range of river valleys, rhododendron forests, and the snow-clad mountain peaks. Helambu Trek is also known for its scenic and panoramic grandeur of the natural beauty and the unspoiled Sherpa culture still prevalent there.
Helambu Trek starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, a wonderful little town nearby Kathmandu. The trek formally starts from Sundarijal and during the course of the next week you will come across several Sherpa villages and monasteries and also the breathtaking views of the mountain peaks. Helambu Trek is quite easy trekking trail as the maximum altitude you cover during the trek is around 3500 meters. Other major attractions of the trek are the villages of Tharepati, Tarke Gyang, Sermathang and down to Melamchi. Melamchi has an ambitious drinking water project that aims to bring the drinking water from Melamchi to the capital city of Kathmandu, aiming to solve the drinking water woes of the Kathmandu denizens.
