The Dolpo region was only recently opened for the trekkers and until 1990 it was a restricted area. The major attraction of the Lower Dolpo Trek is the popular Shey-Phoksundo Lake which lies inside the premises of Shey-Phokundo National Park. The trail passes through several spectacular mountains, Buddhist monasteries and the hordes of Yak, all of which make for a great destination for adventure. The Lower Dolpo Trek is also popular for another reason as the popular Nepali movie ‘Caravan’, directed by Eric Valli, a foreign director, was selected for the Oscars in best foreign movie category more than a decade ago. After the movie got international recognition, foreigners got even more interested in exploring and travelling this remote part of Nepal that is full of natural beauty and also the Tibetan culture.
Another major attraction of the Lower Dolpo Trek is the presence of Shey Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest lake. The lake with its bluish water, eye-catching vicinity of the mountains and the peaceful environment is a great destination for every adventure seekers. The Dolpa region lies to the North of Dhaulagiri Mountain Range. During summer, we can see local Sherpas brining their Yaks and Sheep from the higher altitudes to the lowland pastures for grazing their cattle. The bordering region with Tibet across the Himalayas has traditionally been a trade hub between the businessmen from both Nepal and Tibet. The Lower Dolpa Trek starts when you take a flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu and then to Jhupal.
