Lumbini –where Lord Buddha was born - is a piece of Heaven on Earth, where one could see the snowy mountains amidst a splendid garden, embedded with stupas and monasteries. However, the exact location remained uncertain and dubious until 1 December 1886 when a wandering German archaeologist Dr. Alois A. Fuhrer came across a stone pillar and ascertained beyond doubt it was indeed the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Since that day it has become a focal point for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims
Lumbini is one of the greatest pilgrimage sites for Buddhists. More than 400,000 Buddhists and non Buddhists visit Lumbini every year. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Culture) and holds immense archeological and religious importance.
Lumbini sacred garden is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. . It was here in the gardens of Lumbini that Prince Siddhartha Gautam, who later became the Buddha, was born in 623 BC. After the birth of the Buddha, the birthplace is revered by Buddhists and has attracted pilgrims.
King Ashok made his pilgrimage to Lumbini in 3rd century BC then dedicated Ashok pillar which is still standing in the Lumbini garden. There is more than 22 monasteries from 15 different countries are established in the garden and a lot of Buddhist pilgrims and tourists visit and offer prayers at Lumbini in pursuit of peace of mind.
Mayadevi Temple where excavations have revealed the “marker stone” showing the exact spot where Siddhartha Gautam Buddha was born, is visited by a large number of Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world.
The sacred  Puskarni Pond where Queen Mayadevi had taken a bath before the birth of Buddha lies to the south of the pillar. It was also the pond where the infant Buddha was given his first bath.
Diffirent countries have built various temples and monasteries portraying different sects of Buddhism. To the north of the Sacred Garden are monastic zones where different countries have built temples and monasteries depicting different sects of Buddhism. The Myanmar Temple (Lokamani Cula Pagoda) is a shiny gold and white structure that resembles the Shwe-dagon Pagoda of Yangon while the International Gautami Nuns Temple is a replica of the Swayambhu Stupa of Kathmandu.
There arethe China Temple built by the Buddhist Association of China, the Dae Sung Suk Ga Sa Korean Temple, the Japan Peace Stupa built by Nippon Jon Kyohoji of Japan.The China Temple is a complex of pagodas, prayer rooms and meditation cells. The Japan Peace Stupa, is a 41-m tall structure with four different Buddha statues set into the stupa’s dome facing the four cardinal directions.There are other beautiful monuments and temples have been built by Vietnam, Thailand, Mongolia, France, Germany and Sri Lanka.
