Pokhara, the center of adventure in Nepal is located in the mid western Nepal and it is six hours drive or 20- minutes flight from Kathmandu. Pokhara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nepal after Kathmandu. The valley is filled with lush vegetation, swift flowing rivers and dotted with clear, shimmering lakes. It is one of the major towns of Nepal, providing a perfect gateway from the chaotic life in the cities. Pokhara is blessed with the backdrop of one of the most dramatic sceneries in the world. Due to its stunningly beautiful natural setting and the suitable base for trekking in the Annapurna region, Pokhara is very popular among the visitors. It is the starting point for many of the Nepal’s most popular trekking and rafting destination. It is also the only place in the world from where one can enjoy the magnificent view of mountains having the elevation above 8000 meters while sitting below 1000 meters above the sea level. Out of the 14 highest mountains of the world, known as the Thousanders, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu can be seen from Pokhara.
Pokhara once lay on the important trade route between India and Tibet. To this day, mule trains set up camps on the city outskirts, bringing goods from remote Himalayan regions including Mustang. Gurungs and Magars, who have earned world-wide fame as fierce Gurkha warriors, are predominant here. Thakalis, indigenous of the Thak Khola region of Mustang, are known for their entrepreneurship and run tea houses along the trek routes in the Annapurna region.
Pokhara is the centre to adventure and the gateway to the world famous Annapurna circuit trekking trail.
Lakes:
Phewa Lake is the second largest lake in Nepal, measuring 1.5km × 4 km. Phewa Lake is the major center of attraction in Pokhara. The beautiful street of Pokhara near the lake is named as Lakeside. The enchanting lake is the wonderful playground. Brightly painted wooden boats and sailboats can be rnted on reasonable cost around the lakeside. Phewa Lake is the largest and the most beautiful of the three lakes, attracting large number of visitors who enjoys boating on the lake. Begnas and Rupa Lakes are other major lakes. One can enjoy boating in these lakes too. Medicinal and herbal plants around these areas make the surrounding atmosphere more hygienic and colorful.
Seti Gorge:
Originated from the Machhapuchhre glacier, Seti (which means white in Nepali) is a mysterious wonder of Pokhara. Seti River runs through the main city area in about 40 meters depth. The river provides a perfect view of its dreadful rush before it disappears at Bagar into a deep gorge. The gorge is visible from the bridges in the city from the K.I Singh Bridge, northwest end of the city and from Mahendra pool, Ramhat and Prithivi Chowk area.
Davi’s Fall (Patale Chhango):
The water flowing from Phewa lake shows a wonderful fall. It is said that In the year 1961, a Swiss tourist who was just swimming in the Phewa Lake was swept away due to the unexpected overflow in the dam water and her husband was helpless. Thus, her body was never recovered and was vanished forever. Then the fall was named after her name as Davis Falls. We find hollow sandy part and a heavy fall of water within its natural trench. It looks really amazing scene of rainbow with sunlight when a volume of water falls in the deep rocky gorge and produces the water vapor especially in the summer.
Caves:
There are many caves as Mahendra Cave, Bats cave and crystal cave. Gupteshwar Mahadev cave is just opposite sides of Davi’s Fall where the Hindu religion people worship the temple of their great god Mahadev inside the cave. The bat cave holds thousands of bat inside it. The cave is really dark and dangerous for those who are afraid of the dark. The Mahendra cave is inside the jungle area with a great geological structure.
Tal Barahi Temple:
It is located on a small island in the middle of Phewa Lake just offshore from the lakeside. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach there by boat. The atmosphere is so peaceful for one to enjoy the green forest just beyond the south end, full-scale scenery of the lake and the amazing reflection of the Mountain Fishtail and Annapurna on the surface. There is a huge celebration in the temple during Dashain, the biggest Nepali festival in the month of September/ October.
Bindabasini Temple:
It is located on the top of a small hill at the north of the old bazaar. It is believed to be the one of the oldest temples in the valley. One may get chance to see Nepali wedding ceremony taking place in the premises of the temple on lucky day.
