Mount Lhotse, which means "South peak”, is a part of the Everest massif, just to the south of Everest. In 1956, Mt. Lhotse was first conquered by a Swiss expedition. Its lower peak, mount Lhotse Shar 8383m is sometimes considered a separate 8000m peak. The primary route on mount Lhotse is via Everest's South Col. But until 1955, despite the activity on Mount Everest, Lhotse was the highest unclimbed peak in the world.
The very first endeavor to conquer Mount Lhotse was made by an international team in 1955. The series of the high-quality ´Schneider maps of the Everest Region” was given birth by a member of the team. His name was Erwin Schneider. They were the same Swiss party that made the second endeavor towards the ascension of Mount Everest in 1956 that made the first climb of Mount Lhotse from a camp just below the South Col.
Similarly, in 1970, Mount Lhotse Shar was first conquered by an Austrian expedition team. Japanese, South Koreans, and Germans attempted from various routes on its main peak. The summit was reached again by German expeditions in 1977 and Polish and Italians also conquered it before them.
