Bhotekoshi Flash Flood Catastrophe: Recovered Bodies Surge to 752, Over 2,500 Still Missing

The death toll from the devastating Bhotekoshi River flash floods has reached 752, with 2,502 people officially listed as missing. The disaster, which was triggered on August 26, 2026, by a suspected glacial collapse and heavy rainfall in the upstream Tibetan plateau, sent a catastrophic surge of mud, rock, and water down the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river corridor. 

According to the latest 1:00 PM bulletin issued on Sunday by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the recovered bodies have been carried hundreds of kilometers downstream and retrieved across eight heavily impacted districts: 

• Chitwan: 259 bodies

• Nawalparasi East: 184 bodies

• Nawalparasi West: 100 bodies

• Gorkha: 58 bodies

• Nuwakot: 52 bodies

• Dhading: 50 bodies

• Tanahun: 36 bodies

• Rasuwa (Epicenter): 13 bodies 

Infrastructure Decimated and Hydropower Crisis

The sheer force of the flood has decimated entire riverside settlements, concrete bridges, markets, and roads. Cross-border infrastructure has been severely hit; the crucial Miteri Friendship Bridge connecting Nepal and China at the Rasuwagadhi border was completely washed away, halting all bilateral trade and transit. Large sections of the Pasang Lhamu Highway were also destroyed. 

The disaster has thrown Nepal's energy sector into a massive crisis. Roughly 933 workers from various hydropower projects remain missing. Hundreds of engineers and laborers are feared trapped inside flooded tunnels at multi-megawatt facilities, including the Chilime, Rasuwagadhi, Langtang Khola, and Upper Trishuli-3A projects. While the Nepal Army and specialized forces successfully rescued 279 people trapped in one tunnel over a two-day period, rescue operations inside other tunnels face extreme difficulties due to debris and logistical bottlenecks. 

Missing Foreigners and Tourists

The transborder calamity has left a significant trace in neighboring Tibet, where hundreds of military personnel have been deployed to help search the border town of Gyirong. Current figures indicate that 589 foreign nationals are among the missing within Nepalese tracking logs, which include high numbers of Indian and Chinese tourists or workers. Over 400 travellers heading along trekking routes toward Gosainkunda and Kailash Manasarovar were initially left out of contact. 

Ongoing Rescue Operations and Fresh Alerts

A massive deployment of 19,895 security personnel has been mobilized across the country for search, rescue, and relief distribution. So far, 8,730 individuals have been rescued alive from the flood zones. To cope with the overwhelming numbers of deceased victims, a specialized team of forensic experts has arrived from India to assist with DNA collection and documentation before temporary burials take place. 

International aid has started pouring in, with the United States increasing its humanitarian aid pledge to $3.6 million, alongside emergency allocations from the WHO and the IFRC. Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and local authorities issued emergency text alerts on Sunday morning, warning downstream communities to remain on high alert as persistent monsoon rains cause river levels to surge once more.
